Steven Uranga McKane, D.M.D., M.P.H., M.B.A.

Myron Allukian Jr. Lifetime Achievement Award for Outstanding Contributions in Community Dental Programs 2013 Recipient

Dr. McKane began his career as a National Health Service Corps dentist at the Laredo-Webb County Health Department. There, he revamped an oral-health-care-delivery system serving 100,000 residents and migrants with low incomes. He then became the first dental director of CHS, Inc., where he launched a school-based health and oral health program that became Connecticut’s largest federally qualified health center. Dr. McKane was subsequently made director of health for the Hartford Health Department and later became program director of health for the Kellogg Foundation and then the first president and chief executive officer of the California Endowment. Most recently, has been responsible for operations of the Children’s Dental Center in Inglewood, CA, an education-service oral-health-delivery prototype for the underserved. He has served as chair of the American Public Health Association executive board and was a founding board member and past president of the Hispanic Dental Association. He has received numerous awards, including the U.S. Surgeon General’s Exemplary Service Award.
