Ellie Nadler, R.D.H., B.S., M.P.H.
Community Hero Award
Ellie Nadler is widely recognized for her role in promoting community water fluoridation (CWF) in San Diego, CA. Her passion, leadership, and communication skills have made a huge contribution to the implementation of CWF in the state.
Ellie Nadler began her career as a dental hygienist in 1956 and worked in this capacity until she retired in 2019. Meanwhile, her interest in community-based oral disease prevention, which started during her days as a student in the 1950s, grew.
From 1995 to 2014, Ellie Nadler served as the executive director of the San Diego Fluoridation Coalition. She played a vital role in marshalling support for CWF in San Diego, and advocated for fluoridation of the water system of the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, the largest water system in the United States. As a result of her efforts, many other water districts in San Diego County are now fluoridated, as well.
In addition to serving as executive director of the San Diego Fluoridation Coalition, Ellie Nadler served in several other important positions, including San Diego County Dental Hygienists’ Society president, vice president, program and membership, and coalition liaison to the executive board. She has received many honors and awards, including the Johnson & Johnson Consumer Inc.’s and American Dental Hygienists’ Association’s award for excellence in dental hygiene for outstanding accomplishments impacting the dental hygiene profession, a California Dental Association award recognizing outstanding contribution to CWF, a San Diego Country Dental Society award for long-term efforts and successes in CWF for San Diego residents, and membership in the California Sigma Phi Alpha Dental Hygiene Honor Society.
