Medicaid/SCHIP and Local Promising Practices for Oral Health Access

  Burt Edelstein, D.D.S. M.P.H. or Meg Booth, M.P.H. (invited), Lawrence Hill, D.D.S., M.P.H., Carrie Stempski, R.D.H.
  This session will include information relevant to state and community dental programs or individuals. The session will include speakers from select states and the Children’s Dental Health Project (CDHP) on efforts to increase access to care for children and/or families. CDHP will share highlights from a national perspective on how positive changes in legislation, policy, workforce expansion or innovative initiatives have served to expand oral health care to their populations. The session will end with time for dialogue, questions and comments.

  If you work in a local or community dental program or clinic, come and support your organization by learning what activities are planned and how you can get involved.

8:45 - 10:30 a.m. Federal Activities and Their Impact on the Local Level
  Chris Halliday, D.D.S., M.P.H., Bill Maas, D.D.S., M.P.H., Jay Anderson, D.M.D., M.H.S.A., Mark Nehring, D.M.D, M.P.H.
  Federal dental officers will discuss current and future activities and projects, and the impact they will have on local programs.
10:45 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. Getting a Head Start on Achieving Optimal Oral Health
  Deborah Jacobi, R.D.H., M.S., Lisa Bell, R.D.H., Mark Doherty, D.M.D., M.P.H., C.C.H.P.
  This session will describe promising models that utilize standardized assessments by dental hygienists as an entryway to the oral health care system and the use of collaboration to establish a dental home for children enrolled in Head Start programs. The challenges faced and lessons learned in establishing these models will also be addressed.
12:15 - 1:30 p.m. Introductions and Networking
1:30 - 2:15 p.m. Data: Friend or Foe? Collecting Data for Planning and Evaluation
  Kathy Phipps, Dr.Ph.
  A skill-building session for local program staff.
2:15 - 5:00 p.m. State Practice Act Workforce Issues and How They Impact Access
  Shelly Gehshan, M.P.P., Tammi Byrd, R.D.H., Beth Mertz, M.P.A., Mary E. Willard, D.D.S., Beverly Litchfield, R.D.H.
  This session will look at the local impact of changing practice acts with results from several states.

The annual symposium is held as a pre-conference session to the National Oral Health Conference. The National Oral Health Conference is sponsored by the Association of State and Territorial Dental Directors, the American Association of Public Health Dentistry, the Health Resources and Services Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Stipend Information

A limited number of partial stipends may be available to assist with your expenses. First priority will be given to those who attend the full Sunday session and stay through Wednesday. You must attend the Sunday AACDP meeting to be eligible. More information will be available soon.
